About the course

A six-year (12-semester) integrated programme taught in English, leading to the title Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Years 1 to 4 cover basic, preclinical and foundation clinical subjects. Years 5 and 6 focus on clinical work, with electives in one of three tracks: farm animals and horses, food hygiene and veterinary public health, or household pets.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm.
  • There is no entrance exam. The Faculty selects candidates on academic potential (grades, awards and similar achievements) and personal experience, using the application form and supporting documents. Priority in the first round goes to applicants who have already finished secondary school, but students in their final school year can also apply.
  • The admissions pages do not set a specific English test requirement. Check the call for applications or ask english.studies.info@vef.hr.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Veterinary degrees from EU member states listed in Annex V (point 5.4.2) of Directive 2005/36/EC are recognised qualifications you can register with at the Veterinary Council of Ireland, which in effect means automatic recognition. You still need to apply to the VCI to register before you can practise. Check the VCI’s list of recognised qualifications to confirm your specific degree is on it.

How to apply

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026/27 entry the first round ran from 1 February to 1 July 2026. ASHE announced the final lists after 16 July, and admitted students then had 2 weeks to pay tuition. A second round ran from July to mid-September. The Faculty has not yet published dates for 2027 entry, so confirm them before you apply. There is no entrance exam..

Costs

  • The Faculty’s FAQ gives the student contribution to tuition as 9,000 EUR a year (9,200 EUR if paid in two instalments), without stating the academic year. The exact fee and payment details for each year are in a separate ‘Annual tuition fee’ document on the admissions page, which we could not read, so confirm the 2027/28 amount. There is also a non-refundable application fee, and you must include proof of payment with your application; we could not confirm the amount. Tuition is paid directly to the Faculty within 2 weeks of the final list to secure your place.
Veterinary degrees from EU member states that are listed in Annex V (point 5.4.2) of Directive 2005/36/EC are recognised qualifications for registration with the Veterinary Council of Ireland.
