About the course

A 210 ECTS degree, taught in English over 7 semesters, with a grounding in maths, physics, chemistry and biochemistry, followed by core chemical engineering and chemistry. From the fifth semester students choose chemical and process engineering, industrial pharmaceutics or materials science, and complete a 6-week internship and a thesis.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Hungary has no official points conversion for the Leaving Certificate. BME asks for an eligible high school diploma, and each university decides whether to accept the Leaving Cert. Ask BME admissions how your Leaving Cert grades (H1-H8, O1-O8) will be assessed.
  • You must pass BME’s admission tests. The programme page does not list the test subjects, so check them in the BME e-admission system. Applicants found weak in basic subjects are directed to a one-year Preparatory Course first.
  • You need English at B2 level (e.g. IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, Cambridge B2 First 160, Duolingo 100). BME also accepts a Medium of Instruction Certificate, so ask whether a letter from your Irish school is enough.

How to apply

  1. Check requirementsAsk BME how your Leaving Cert is assessed, which subjects the admission test covers, and whether a medium-of-instruction letter will cover the English requirement.
  2. Apply onlineApply through BME e-admission during the spring window (1 April to 15 May in the 2026 cycle) and pay the €150 application fee.
  3. Take the admission testSit the online admission test and upload your school certificate and English proof.
  4. Accept and enrolIf you get an offer, accept it, pay the first semester’s tuition and arrange EU registration in Budapest before classes start in September. You must be 18 by enrolment.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For the September 2026 intake, applications for fee-paying places ran from 1 April to 15 May 2026. BME has not yet published 2027 dates, so expect a similar window and confirm with BME..

Costs

  • BME’s 2026/27 fee table lists €1,100 (400,000 HUF) per semester for EU citizens in Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, so about €2,200 a year; non-EU students pay €3,200 per semester. BME says fees may vary from year to year. There is a non-refundable €150 application fee.
The EU fee for this degree (€1,100 or 400,000 HUF per semester in 2026/27) is about half the EU fee for BME’s electrical and computer engineering degrees. Entry is by BME’s own admission test, not CAO-style points.
