About the course

An 8-semester (240 ECTS) English-taught civil engineering degree covering science and engineering fundamentals, a civil engineering core and economics and management, with a choice of Structural Engineering or Infrastructure Engineering. It finishes with a bachelor thesis.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Hungary has no Leaving Cert points conversion for English-taught degrees. BME asks for a completed secondary school-leaving certificate, which the Leaving Cert normally meets, and then decides entry mainly on its own entrance test. BME publishes no specific Leaving Cert grades, so confirm with admissions how your results are assessed.
  • BME first checks your documents (school certificate or transcript, motivation letter, optional recommendation letter, extracurricular activities) and then sets an online e-admission test in Mathematics and Physics, in English. Depending on the result you are admitted to the BSc, placed on the one-year Pre-Engineering (preparatory) course, or rejected. Strong Higher Level Maths and Physics preparation will help.
  • English at B2 level: IELTS 5.5, Cambridge FCE 160, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE 50, Duolingo 100, or a Medium of Instruction certificate. Ask your school for a certificate confirming you were taught through English. You must be 18 by enrolment.

How to apply

  1. Check the 2027 windowWatch xplore.bme.hu for the 2027 dates. In 2026 applications ran from 1 April to 15 May.
  2. Apply on e-admissionCreate an account at e-admission.bme.hu, upload your school certificate or transcript, motivation letter, English proof and other documents, and pay the EUR 150 fee.
  3. Sit the online testAfter document pre-evaluation, take the e-admission test in Mathematics and Physics in English.
  4. Accept and enrolIf admitted, accept the offer, pay the first semester fee (EUR 1,100 for EU students in 2026/27) and arrange travel and housing in Budapest for September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For September 2026 entry the application window was 1 April to 15 May 2026. BME has not yet published the 2027 dates; expect a similar spring window and confirm on xplore.bme.hu. The online Mathematics and Physics e-admission test is taken after your documents are pre-evaluated..

Costs

  • EU students pay EUR 1,100 (HUF 400,000) per semester, so about EUR 2,200 a year (2026/27 rate; non-EU students pay EUR 3,200 per semester). BME says fees may change from year to year. There is a non-refundable application fee of EUR 150.
Entry depends on BME’s own Maths and Physics online test, not Leaving Cert points, and weaker results can lead to a one-year preparatory course first. The EU fee of EUR 1,100 a semester is much lower than the non-EU rate.
