About the course

A three-year (six-semester), 180-ECTS mathematics degree taught in English at BME’s Faculty of Natural Sciences. It covers algebra, analysis and differential equations, geometry, discrete mathematics, operations research, theory of algorithms, probability and statistics, plus programming, mathematical modelling and some economics.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • BME asks for a secondary school-leaving certificate; the Leaving Certificate normally meets this, but there is no Leaving Cert points or grade conversion. Instead every applicant sits BME’s online e-admission exam or placement test, and applicants with weak maths, science or English can be placed on a one-year Preparatory Course first. Applicants must be 18 by enrolment. Confirm with BME admissions that your Leaving Cert is accepted.
  • Mathematics BSc: admission depends on passing BME’s online admission test, so a strong Higher Level Maths background is advisable. The test content is not published on the programme page.
  • English: B2 level is required, e.g. IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, Cambridge B2 First 160 or Duolingo 100. BME also accepts a Medium of Instruction Certificate, so ask your school for one and confirm with admissions that it is enough.

How to apply

  2. Register on e-admissionCreate an account on e-admission.bme.hu, upload your CV, motivation letter, passport, school certificates and English proof, and pay the 150 EUR application fee (2026 window: 1 April to 15 May).
  3. Sit the online admission testComplete BME’s electronic admission test after submitting your application; revise Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths.
  4. Accept the offer and enrolAccept your admission letter, pay the first semester’s tuition and arrange EU registration and accommodation in Budapest before September 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For fee-paying students the application period for September 2026 entry was 1 April to 15 May 2026, through the BME e-admission portal, followed by BME’s online admission test. The 2027 dates were not yet published when checked; confirm on the BME admission page..

Costs

  • EU citizens pay 1,650 EUR (600,000 HUF) per semester in 2026/27, about 3,300 EUR a year; non-EU citizens pay 3,200 EUR per semester. There is a non-refundable application fee of 150 EUR. BME says fees may vary from year to year, so check the 2027/28 table when it is published.
There is no CAO-style points system: your place depends on passing BME’s own online admission test, and you apply directly to BME in a short spring window (1 April to 15 May in 2026).
