About the course

A 7-semester (210 ECTS) degree taught in English. It combines maths, physics, engineering fundamentals, design and manufacturing, electronics and control, fluids and heat transfer, and materials science. Students specialise in Process Engineering or Engineering Design and Technology.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Hungary does not convert Leaving Cert points or grades for English-taught programmes. BME asks for a completed secondary school-leaving certificate, and the Leaving Certificate normally counts. BME publishes no specific Leaving Cert grade rule, so check with admissions how it will assess your Higher Level results.
  • You must pass BME’s online e-admission exam or placement test. The mechanical engineering page does not name the test subjects. BME says BSc applicants with weak skills in the basic subjects (Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, and English) can be sent to a one-year Preparatory Course first.
  • English at B2 level is required, for example IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, Cambridge B2 First 160 or Duolingo 100. BME does not say whether Leaving Cert English is accepted as proof, so ask admissions whether a medium-of-instruction certificate from your school will do.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGet your CV, motivation letter, passport copy, secondary school certificate (or predicted results) and proof of English ready by spring 2027.
  2. Apply on e-admissionApply on e-admission.bme.hu during the application window (1 April to 15 May in the 2026 cycle) and pay the 150 euro fee.
  3. Sit the entrance testTake BME’s online e-admission test. Weaker results may lead to an offer of the Preparatory Course instead.
  4. Accept and enrolAccept your offer, pay the first semester’s fee and enrol for a September 2027 start. You must be 18 by enrolment.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For September 2026 entry, fee-paying applicants applied between 1 April and 15 May 2026 through BME’s e-admission system. The 2027 dates have not been published yet, but expect a similar April to mid-May window. Confirm on the BME admission page..

Costs

  • EU students pay 1,100 euro (400,000 HUF) per semester, so about 2,200 euro a year (2026/27 rate; non-EU students pay 3,500 euro per semester). BME says fees may vary from year to year and can change without notice. There is also a non-refundable application fee of 150 euro.
The degree lasts 3.5 years (7 semesters), not the usual 3 or 4. Entry depends on BME’s own online test, not Leaving Cert points.
