About the course

A three-year degree in English language, British and American literature, culture, history and linguistics. After year one, students pick a specialisation (Business English, English-Hungarian Translation or a minor), then a track in American Studies, British Studies or Linguistics and Communication, and finish with a thesis and final exam.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university asks for a completed high school certificate and does not publish a Leaving Cert grade or points conversion. Hungary has no national Leaving Cert conversion for English-taught programmes. Admission depends on the university’s own entrance exam and interview, so confirm with admissions that your Leaving Cert is accepted. Final-year students send transcripts for the last 2-3 years and predicted grades, then the final certificate once they have it.
  • Two-stage online entrance exam: first a written test (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and an essay), then, if you pass, an oral interview with two examiners about everyday topics, your motivation and your school studies.
  • English: B2 is required (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL PBT 513). The university says a certificate is not strictly required, because your English is assessed at the interview. Native speakers and students taught through English can be exempt from the test.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather your passport, CV, medical certificate, school transcripts for the last 2-3 years, and predicted grades if you have not yet sat the Leaving Cert.
  2. Apply online and paySubmit through the university’s online application system and pay the non-refundable USD 150 application fee. Apply by 15 May 2027 to be safe; in the 2026 cycle the deadline was 15 June.
  3. Sit the online exam and interviewPay the USD 350 entrance fee, then take the online written English test. If you pass, you do an online oral interview with two examiners.
  4. Accept and enrolIf you get an offer, pay the tuition as instructed, send your final Leaving Cert results, and arrive in Debrecen for the September start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: There is one intake a year, in September. The published deadline for the 2026 cycle was 15 June 2026. The university’s admissions page also says the September 2027 application period will open later in 2026, with a final deadline of 15 May 2027. That notice sits beside a Medicine and Dentistry announcement, so confirm the 2027 date for this programme with admissions and aim to apply by 15 May 2027..

Costs

  • Tuition is USD 6,000 a year for students admitted in 2026/27, roughly €5,200 depending on the exchange rate. The university publishes one fee for all international self-funded students and shows no separate EU rate. You also pay a USD 150 application fee and a USD 350 entrance procedure fee, which covers the exam and interview. Both are non-refundable and are paid by bank transfer. Health insurance and the student card are included in the tuition fee.
This is a self-funded place with fees in US dollars, about USD 6,000 a year plus USD 500 in non-refundable application and exam fees. Entry depends on the university’s own online English test and interview, not on Leaving Cert points.
