About the course

A four-year (8-semester, 240 ECTS) nursing degree with all courses taught in English, based at the university’s Nyíregyháza campus. It includes an extensive 48-week internship in healthcare settings.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm.
  • You sit a written Biology exam and an entrance interview in English on your level of English, school studies, motivation and communication skills. The programme page says online oral and written exams are offered for the initial stages, so you may not need to travel.
  • English at B2 level is required (equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 513 paper-based). A certificate is not strictly required, as your English is assessed at the interview.

Working in Ireland afterwards

NMBI recognises EU/EEA nursing qualifications in a separate step before registration, and places each applicant in one of three groups. G1 is the EU automatic recognition pathway (Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V), where NMBI only checks your paperwork. G2 is the general system, where NMBI also assesses your qualification, and you may have to complete a compensation measure. G3 covers qualifications outside the Directive. Under EU law, automatic recognition normally applies to general care (adult) nursing degrees listed in Annex V. Specialist qualifications such as psychiatric, children’s or intellectual disability nursing usually go through the general system, but NMBI does not publish a list. Its MyNMBI tool tells you which group you are in. English-language requirements also apply.

How to apply

  1. Apply onlineRegister on the university’s STUART portal and upload the application form, your school certificate (or predicted grades), transcripts for your last 2-3 years, proof of citizenship, CV and the university’s medical certificate.
  2. Pay the feesPay the 150 USD non-refundable application fee and include the bank receipt with your application. The 350 USD entrance examination fee is also payable.
  3. Sit the exam and interviewTake the written Biology exam and the English-language interview; initial stages can be done online. Check the university’s exam topics and sample tests page to prepare.
  4. Meet the deadlineSubmit your application by 15 May 2027 for a September 2027 start in Nyíregyháza, then accept your offer and arrange accommodation.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For the September 2027 intake the university says applications open later in 2026 and the final deadline will be 15 May 2027. The programme page still shows the older general deadline of 15 June, so go by 15 May 2027 to be safe. The written Biology exam and interview are arranged after you apply; dates are not published..

Costs

  • The university charges tuition in US dollars: 7,500 USD a year for students admitted in 2026/27 (roughly 6,400 euro, depending on the exchange rate). There is also a non-refundable application fee of 150 USD and a 350 USD entrance examination fee (refundable only if you cancel your exam registration at least one week before the exam). The university does not publish a lower fee for EU students, so expect the full fee. Health insurance and the student card are included in the tuition fee.
NMBI recognises EU/EEA nursing qualifications in a separate step before registration and places each applicant in group G1 (automatic, for general care nursing listed in Annex V), G2 (assessed, possibly with a compensation measure) or G3; its MyNMBI tool tells you which group you are in, and English-language requirements apply. The course is taught in Nyíregyháza, not on the main Debrecen campus, and includes Hungarian language classes in Years 1 and 2.
