About the course

A 10-semester (5-year) PharmD programme taught in English, starting in September. It covers the chemical, biological and pharmaceutical sciences and includes practical pharmacy training.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. You apply with your secondary school certificate and transcripts (in English or translated).
  • Entrance exam in English: a written test in Biology plus either Chemistry or Physics (45 minutes each), followed by an oral exam. Completing the Basic Medicine Course is an alternative route in.
  • English: a standardised certificate at B2 level or above from a proctored exam, and your English is also assessed at the entrance exam.

Working in Ireland afterwards

A pharmacy degree from an EU/EEA member state that fully meets the Directive 2005/36/EC minimum training requirements (Article 44) can be recognised automatically. If you started your studies before the Directive’s reference date, you also need 3 consecutive years of professional experience within the last 5 years. Recognition is step one and PSI registration is step two: recognition alone does not let you practise, and you must also prove competence in English. EU law allows countries to limit EU-qualified pharmacists from running newly opened pharmacies, and we could not confirm on the PSI website whether Ireland does this. If you plan to be the supervising or superintendent pharmacist in a pharmacy, check with the PSI.

  3. Sit the entrance examPay the USD 350 entrance fee and sit the written and oral exam in Biology plus Chemistry or Physics, in Hungary, abroad or online.
  4. EnrolAccept your offer, pay the first-year tuition in full and start in Debrecen in September 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: The university’s admissions page says applications for the September 2027 intake open later in 2026 and close on 15 May 2027. The Pharmacy page itself gives no deadline, and in the 2026 cycle non-Medicine programmes closed on 15 June, so confirm the Pharmacy date with the university. Exam dates are on the university’s exam calendar; exams are held in Hungary, abroad, or online if you cannot travel..

Costs

  • USD 8,000 per year (about EUR 6,900, depending on the exchange rate) on the 2026/27 fee list. The university publishes one fee for all students and no lower EU rate. There is also a one-off, non-refundable application fee of USD 150 (about EUR 130) and an entrance procedure fee of USD 350 (about EUR 300). Health insurance, the medical check-up and the student card are included. First-year students must pay in full; from second year you can ask to pay in two instalments. Fees for 2027/28 are not yet published.
A pharmacy degree from an EU country that fully meets the Directive 2005/36/EC minimum training requirements can be recognised automatically, but you then need to register with the PSI and prove your English before you can practise; if you plan to be a supervising or superintendent pharmacist, check with the PSI. Hungarian language classes are part of the curriculum.
