English and American Studies BA

About the course

A three-year, English-taught BA in English and American language, literature and culture. Students choose an English or an American track at the end of the first semester. It does not give a teaching qualification.

Entry requirements for Irish students

• Hungary asks for a completed upper-secondary school-leaving qualification, which the Leaving Certificate normally meets, but ELTE decides whether to accept it. There is no Leaving Cert points or H1-H8 grade conversion for this programme; admission is based on your documents and an online interview. Confirm with admissions (admission@btk.elte.hu) that your Leaving Cert is accepted.
• You apply with a motivation letter, CV, passport copy and your school certificate, then sit an online oral entrance interview about your motivation.
• English at B2 level is required (IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72-94 or Duolingo 100 are listed) and is assessed in the oral exam. ELTE does not say whether Leaving Cert English is accepted as proof, so check before relying on it.

How to apply

1. Choose your application periodApply between 1 Oct and 30 Nov 2026 or 1 Feb and 31 Mar 2027 for the lower €100 fee; the final window is 1 Apr to 31 May 2027 (€150).
2. Prepare documentsGather your school certificate (or predicted results), CV, motivation letter, passport copy and an English certificate if you have one.
3. Apply and pay onlineSubmit through apply.elte.hu and pay the application fee and €100 entrance exam fee through ELTE’s payment system.
4. Sit the online interviewTake the online oral exam about your motivation, which also checks your English. If admitted, studies start 1 September 2027.

Costs

• €2,300 per semester (€4,600 a year), the same for EU/EEA and non-EU students. One-off, non-refundable fees: application fee €100 if you apply 1 Oct to 30 Nov 2026 or 1 Feb to 31 Mar 2027, or €150 if you apply 1 Apr to 31 May 2027, plus a €100 entrance exam fee.
