About the course

A three-year performance degree taught in English, with separate programme pages for piano, violin, guitar and flute (viola is mentioned on the violin page). Alongside instrumental study it covers chamber music, orchestral performance, music theory and related subjects.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The University of Pécs asks for a completed secondary-school qualification, and the Leaving Certificate normally meets this. There is no published Leaving Cert grade conversion: admission depends mainly on the entrance exam, so confirm with admissions that your Leaving Cert is accepted.
  • The main-subject exam uses uncut recordings of set repertoire played from memory. Piano applicants play a Bach prelude and fugue, a Classical sonata movement, a virtuoso étude, a Romantic piece and a 20th-century work. Violin applicants play two contrasting études, two movements from Bach’s solo sonatas or partitas and a main concerto movement with cadenza. There is also solfège, music theory and an interview.
  • English: you must show proficiency, but the entrance committee may waive the certificate if your English is good enough in the oral exam.

The entrance exam has an aptitude test (instrumental and music theory), a main-subject practical exam based on uncut video and audio recordings, and an interview. You are offered two possible interview dates, allowing for time zones..

Costs

  • EUR 4,500 per semester (EUR 9,000 a year). The programme pages list no separate EU rate. There is a non-refundable application fee of EUR 100.
Admission depends on your playing. Uncut recordings of set repertoire played from memory are required, and there is no lower EU fee, so budget EUR 9,000 a year.
