About the course

A 6-year M.D. programme taught in English at the University of Pécs Medical School. It covers ten semesters of basic, preclinical and clinical modules, followed by one year of clinical rotations with ward-based practical training.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. It asks for the best possible school grades in Biology and Chemistry (the programme page also mentions Physics) and says admission is based solely on how you do in the entrance exam.
  • Entrance exam: a 1 hour 40 minute multiple-choice written test with Biology (20 questions), Chemistry (20), General English (40) and Medical English (20), plus a 20-30 minute interview with a professor covering medicine-related questions and your motivation. The university publishes 30 Biology topics, 20 Chemistry topics and sample tests. You get up to three attempts.
  • English: B2 (upper intermediate) level is required, but you do not need a language certificate.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Apply onlineRegister at apply.pte.hu from 1 November 2026. Upload a passport-size photo, a copy of your passport, a Europass CV in English with a photo, and your school leaving certificate and transcript (in English or with an authorised translation). Then pay the USD 200 application fee when asked.
  2. Book the entrance examEmail studentservice.center@aok.pte.hu at least two weeks before the Wednesday you want and pay the USD 250 exam fee. Exams run from 3 March to 14 July 2027.
  3. Sit the written test and interviewPrepare using the published Biology and Chemistry topic lists and the sample tests. Results come out within a week.
  4. Accept and enrolIf you are accepted, follow the dates in your Acceptance Letter and pay the tuition deposit to receive your Final Acceptance Letter. The final application deadline is 30 June 2027. At enrolment, bring hard copies of your documents and your medical documents (a doctor’s certificate, health history form, chest X-ray note, Hepatitis B vaccination record and an HIV test no older than 3 months).
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Applications for September 2027 open on 1 November 2026 and close on 30 June 2027. Admission is continuous, and the university says the earlier you apply, the more places it can offer. For direct applicants, entrance exams are held every Wednesday from 3 March to 14 July 2027. The exam has two parts: a written multiple-choice test (online or on paper) and an oral interview (online via Zoom or MS Teams, or in person)..

Costs

  • The university charges USD 16,750 a year for 2027/28 (USD 9,000 for the first semester and USD 7,750 for the second), which is roughly EUR 14,300 at current exchange rates. The exact euro amount will depend on the rate when you pay. The university publishes a single fee with no separate EU rate, so Irish students pay the full fee. One-off fees on top: USD 200 application fee, USD 250 entrance exam fee and USD 220 registration fee.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V, as long as you also meet the professional-standing and English-language requirements. Older HSE intern guides said graduates from EEA countries not on their list (Hungary was not on it) could not apply for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
