About the course

A four-year (eight-semester) nursing degree taught in English at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Pécs, with skills practice on lifelike equipment and field practice in semesters V to VIII in areas such as internal medicine, surgery, oncology, neurology, intensive care, obstetrics and paediatric nursing. The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Patient Care (Nurse).

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Its general rule is a secondary school leaving certificate, with the mean of your Biology grade and one other subject of your choice weighted in your average, so Leaving Cert Biology matters.
  • There is no science entrance exam. Instead there is a 15-minute online oral interview in English (Microsoft Teams) with two examiners, who start a conversation on two of nine set topics, such as challenges of health professions, disease prevention, your professional plans and what you expect from studying in Hungary. Your passport photo is checked against you on screen.
  • English: B2 (intermediate) level, assessed through the online interview. The programme page asks for a B2 English proficiency certificate, while the faculty’s 2026 application page says a certificate is recommended but not obligatory, so confirm with the International Office.

Working in Ireland afterwards

NMBI recognises EU/EEA nursing qualifications in a separate step before registration, and places each applicant in one of three groups. G1 is the EU automatic recognition pathway (Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V), where NMBI only checks your paperwork. G2 is the general system, where NMBI also assesses your qualification, and you may have to complete a compensation measure. G3 covers qualifications outside the Directive. Under EU law, automatic recognition normally applies to general care (adult) nursing degrees listed in Annex V. Specialist qualifications such as psychiatric, children’s or intellectual disability nursing usually go through the general system, but NMBI does not publish a list. Its MyNMBI tool tells you which group you are in. English-language requirements also apply.

Studies start on 1 September 2027 (autumn intake only)..

Costs

  • EUR 2,900 per semester (about EUR 5,800 a year), as listed on the programme page for the September 2027 intake. The university publishes one fee with no separate EU rate, so Irish students pay the full fee, as is usual for English-language programmes in Hungary. One-off costs: EUR 200 application fee (paid before your application is assessed) and EUR 100 registration fee, paid with the first tuition instalment.
NMBI recognises EU nursing qualifications before registration and places you in G1 (automatic recognition, normally for general care nursing listed in Annex V), G2 (assessment, possibly with a compensation measure) or G3; its MyNMBI tool tells you your group, and English-language requirements apply. Hungarian for Medical Purposes is taught in semesters I to IV (0 credits).
