About the course

A six-semester (180 ECTS) degree taught in English on English-speaking cultures, mainly those of the UK and the USA, covering their societies, history, language and literatures. Specialisations include English Studies, American Studies and Business English.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Hungary has no national Leaving Certificate points conversion for English-taught programmes. Szeged asks for a certificate of completed secondary education and then runs its own entrance exam. The Leaving Cert normally meets this requirement, but no Leaving Cert grades are specified, so confirm with admissions.
  • A compulsory entrance exam (EUR 250) and a motivation letter are required. The exam format is not published.
  • English: an international certificate is required (IELTS 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each part, TOEFL iBT 87 with at least 20 in each section, TOEFL ITP 543, or Cambridge First Certificate). Leaving Cert English is not listed, so plan to take one of these tests.

How to apply

  1. Take an English testBook IELTS (6.5 overall needed) or another accepted test early. The university lists international certificates, not school results.
  2. Apply on DreamApplyOnce the 2027/28 intake opens, apply at apply.u-szeged.hu. Upload your passport, school results in English, English certificate and motivation letter, and pay the EUR 79 fee.
  3. Sit the entrance examAfter your documents are checked, pay the EUR 250 exam fee and take the entrance exam.
  4. Accept and pay tuitionIf you are admitted, pay the first semester’s fee (EUR 1,800) and arrange accommodation before studies start in early September 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Dates for September 2027 entry have not been published yet. The 2026/27 application period has closed, and studies started on 7 September 2026. The entrance exam is held after your application documents are checked..

Costs

  • EUR 1,800 per semester (EUR 3,600 a year). The university publishes one tuition fee for its international degree programmes and does not list a separate EU rate. One-off costs: a EUR 79 application fee per programme and a EUR 250 entrance exam fee, both non-refundable.
You will almost certainly need an IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) certificate, because Szeged asks for an international English certificate and does not mention Leaving Cert English.
