About the course

A six-year (12-semester), 360-credit undivided programme taught in English that leads to the Doctor of Medicine title. The early years cover basic medical sciences, clinical practice starts from year three, and the final semesters are rotations through the medical specialties.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Applicants must be over 18, and you cannot apply if you failed Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or English in your final year of school. The university gives preference to applicants who studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Online entrance exam. The written part is 60 minutes on CooSpace, monitored over Zoom, with 20 multiple-choice questions each in Biology, Chemistry and English. The oral part is an interview of about 20 minutes over Zoom with a university professor: two Biology and two Chemistry questions, asked in English. You can sit a maximum of two exams in one application period.
  • You need good spoken and written English, and English is tested in the entrance exam. An eight-month Foundation Year is available if you are not yet ready for the programme.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Costs

  • EUR 7,900 per semester (EUR 15,800 a year) in 2026/27. The first-semester payment is split as EUR 7,100 tuition plus an EUR 800 deposit. The sixth (internship) year is a single payment of EUR 7,900; if you do more than half of the sixth-year placements at the university hospitals, extra fees are charged pro rata. The fee is charged to EU students too, as this is a self-funded English-language programme. There is a one-off, non-refundable EUR 300 combined application and entrance exam fee, paid once for up to three health science programmes and covering up to two exam attempts. General health insurance valid in Hungary is included in the tuition fee; books, accommodation and living costs are not. Discounts include EUR 300 off the first semester for students admitted by 30 April.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V, and you must also show current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Hungary was not on the 2022 HSE intern eligibility list, so check the current HSE intern guide; Hungarian language is a compulsory subject over several semesters starting in first year.
