About the course

This is an eight-semester (240 ECTS) nursing degree taught in English in Szeged, covering the theory and practice of nursing science. Clinical practice begins after the first year, and the last two semesters are mainly practical placements in clinics.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The general rules are: a secondary school leaving certificate, no failed subjects in your final school year, and age 18 by 31 December of the year you apply.
  • Entrance exam: if you apply only for Nursing, the exam assesses just your English plus a motivational conversation, held online via Coospace and Zoom. If you also apply for Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy, you must sit the full Biology, Chemistry and English exam. You can sit a maximum of two exams in one application period.
  • English requirement: B2 level or equivalent (for example Cambridge English, IELTS or TOEFL).

Working in Ireland afterwards

NMBI recognises EU/EEA nursing qualifications in a separate step before registration, and places each applicant in one of three groups. G1 is the EU automatic recognition pathway (Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V), where NMBI only checks your paperwork. G2 is the general system, where NMBI also assesses your qualification, and you may have to complete a compensation measure. G3 covers qualifications outside the Directive. Under EU law, automatic recognition normally applies to general care (adult) nursing degrees listed in Annex V. Specialist qualifications such as psychiatric, children’s or intellectual disability nursing usually go through the general system, but NMBI does not publish a list. Its MyNMBI tool tells you which group you are in. English-language requirements also apply.

Costs

  • EUR 3,500 per semester (EUR 7,000 per year). EU students pay this too, because this is a fee-paying English-language programme. The university says the tuition fee includes general health insurance valid for Hungary, but not textbooks, accommodation or living costs. There is also a one-off, non-refundable application and entrance exam fee of EUR 300. It covers up to two exam attempts and applications to up to three health science programmes. These are the fees listed for 2026 entry, so check the 2027/28 fee when applications open.
NMBI recognises EU/EEA nursing qualifications in a separate step before registration. General care (adult) nursing degrees listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC normally use the G1 automatic pathway. Otherwise, NMBI assesses the degree under the general system (G2), and you may need to complete a compensation measure. NMBI’s MyNMBI tool confirms your group, and English-language requirements apply.
