About the course

A six-year programme taught entirely in English that combines Medicine and Surgery with biomedical engineering, run by Humanitas University with Politecnico di Milano. According to Humanitas, graduates receive an MD from Humanitas and a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. In general, your school-leaving diploma must follow at least 12 years of schooling, and at enrolment you need a translation legalised by the Italian consulate plus a Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di Valore).
  • Admission is by the HUMAT test: 60 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes, taken online in English. Sections: Scientific Thinking and Academic Literacy (20 questions), Biology and Chemistry (20) and Mathematics and Physics (20). For MEDTEC, a correct answer earns 10 points in Scientific Thinking, 16 in Biology/Chemistry and 22 in Maths/Physics, with penalties for wrong answers. You must pass a minimum score in each section (40, 64 and 88 points) to be ranked.
  • English: B2 level recommended. If you pass the admission test, you do not need to submit a separate English certificate. Students in their penultimate school year (Irish 5th year) may sit the test, and their score then counts for admission a year later.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026/27 cycle (2027/28 dates not yet published): registration for Round I closed 26 February 2026 at 12:00 CET (test 5-6 March 2026); registration for Round II only closed 12 March 2026 at 12:00 CET (test 18-20 March 2026). A recovery test was held on 24 March 2026. You can sit both rounds and your best score counts. The ranking was published on 30 March 2026 and enrolment closed on 8 April 2026 at 12:00 CEST. Expect similar February-March dates for 2027 entry, but confirm when the 2027 call is published..

Costs

  • For 2026/27, EU tuition depends on family income (ISEP index): EUR 10,206 a year (ISEP under EUR 30,000), EUR 15,206 (EUR 30,000-55,000), EUR 19,206 (EUR 55,000-80,000) or EUR 23,206 (over EUR 80,000). You submit income documents through the university’s web portal to be placed in a band. Humanitas is a private university, so these fees apply to EU students too. The HUMAT test application fee is EUR 200 and is not refundable. At enrolment you pay a first instalment of EUR 5,206, which is normally not refundable, plus a EUR 190 regional tax. Accommodation, food and books are extra.
Because your degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V, provided you show professional standing and meet the English requirements. Older HSE intern guides said Italian graduates with the ‘abilitante’ degree were not eligible for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE guide. Teaching is in English, but you are expected to speak good Italian with patients by the start of Year 3; the university offers free Italian courses.
