About the course

A six-year, 360-ECTS medical degree taught entirely in English, run with the University of Bergamo and Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo. It uses problem-based learning, with basic and clinical sciences taught together.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The call only requires a secondary school diploma from a course of at least four years that gives access to university in the country where it was awarded. You must upload it, or proof of current enrolment, with your school reports for the last two years on Apply@unimib by the deadline.
  • Entry is decided by the national IMAT: 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes, worth up to 90 points. It covers reading skills and general knowledge (4 questions), logical reasoning (5), Biology (23), Chemistry (15) and Physics and Maths (13). Each right answer earns +1.5, each wrong answer -0.4, and a blank earns 0. EU candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked. Test centres abroad are available.
  • English at B2 or above is required. Native English speakers, including Irish applicants, and anyone whose previous studies were entirely in English are exempt.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Register for IMAT on UniversitalyCreate a Universitaly account and register for IMAT. You rank your university choices and pay the test fee there. In 2026 registration ran from 26 August to 9 September; watch for the 2027 dates in summer 2027.
  2. Upload your school documents on Apply@unimibBy the same deadline (9 September in 2026), upload your Leaving Certificate or proof of enrolment, plus your 5th and 6th Year school reports and passport, for the university to check.
  3. Sit IMATThe test is held in late September (29 September in 2026) and can be sat at an Italian or international test centre. You need at least 20 out of 90 to be ranked.
  4. Check rankings and enrol quicklyNamed rankings appear in late October (26 October in 2026). If you are offered a place ("ASSEGNATO"), enrol and pay the first instalment within 4 working days, or you lose the place.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle (2027 dates not yet published): IMAT registration on Universitaly ran from 26 August to 9 September 2026 (3pm Italian time). Candidates with a foreign school qualification also had to upload their documents on Apply@unimib by 9 September 2026. IMAT was held on 29 September 2026. Anonymous scores are published on 8 October, individual results on 19 October and named rankings on 26 October 2026. If you are offered a place ("ASSEGNATO"), you must enrol and pay the first instalment within 4 working days. Expect similar late-summer dates for 2027 entry..

Costs

  • Fees at Milano-Bicocca depend on income and residence. Students with non-Italian citizenship, a school qualification from abroad and residence abroad count as international students and pay a fixed rate by country group. Ireland is in Group 3, the highest band: for medicine that is EUR 3,600 a year (EUR 1,080 second instalment plus EUR 2,520 third instalment) in 2026/27. On top of this, every student pays a first instalment of EUR 146 (stamp duty and part of the regional tax) at enrolment, plus a regional tax balance of up to EUR 60. Separately, you pay an IMAT test fee on Universitaly (the university’s call does not state the amount). The 2027/28 fees have not been published yet.
Because this degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V. Italian graduates with the ‘abilitante’ degree were told in older HSE guides that they could not apply for Irish intern posts, because they qualify directly for General registration. No Italian is needed for entry, but you must learn enough Italian to do clinical placements and talk with patients.
