About the course

A 6-year, 360-ECTS single-cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery (12 semesters), taught in English at the Federico II School of Medicine in Naples. It is open to EU and non-EU students.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Places are given out through the national IMAT ranking, not on Leaving Cert grades.
  • IMAT (2026 format): 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes: 4 reading comprehension, 5 logical reasoning, 23 biology, 15 chemistry and 13 physics/maths. A correct answer scores 1.5 points and a wrong one loses 0.4. EU candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked.
  • You do not need an English certificate to sit the test. However, a recognised certificate at B2, C1 or C2 level (e.g. Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL, Trinity) is used as a tie-breaker. If you spent at least one school year at a school that teaches in English, you are treated as holding one.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

The test was on 29 September 2026 at 13:30 Italian time and lasted 100 minutes. Scores are published on 8 October 2026 and the national merit rankings on 26 October 2026. Candidates still waiting for a place must confirm their interest within 5 working days after each ranking update. Dates for 2027 entry are not yet published..

Costs

  • Under the university’s 2026/27 fee rules, students who are citizens of another EU country pay a fixed contribution of EUR 200 (where their calculated contribution would be EUR 200 or more). On top of this come the Campania regional study-right tax (EUR 173 if you do not submit an Italian ISEE income statement) and EUR 16 stamp duty, so the total is about EUR 389 a year. It is paid in instalments: the first (60% of the contribution plus the regional tax and stamp duty) is due by 2 November 2026, then 20% by 1 March 2027 and 20% by 30 April 2027. The fee guide has no separate rule for English-taught courses. You also pay an IMAT registration fee on Universitaly when you book the test, but we could not confirm the amount. Fees for 2027/28 are not yet published.
Because this is an EU medical degree, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V, together with any internship or state-exam certificate that listing requires. You must also show current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Older HSE intern guides said Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree qualify directly for General registration and so could not apply for Irish intern posts, so check the current HSE intern guide.
