About the course

A six-year dentistry degree taught in English and run by the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Sciences in Rome. Entry is through the same national IMAT exam used for Medicine.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement for this course. Sapienza’s ‘Accepted qualifications by country’ list (2026/27) covers Ireland, so check it and contact admissions to confirm. Selection is by IMAT score, not school grades.
  • IMAT (2026): 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes: biology 23, chemistry 15, physics and maths 13, logical reasoning 5 and reading comprehension 4. You score +1.5 for a correct answer, -0.4 for a wrong one and 0 for a blank. EU candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked.
  • English: the 2026/27 call accepts listed certificates, and anyone who attended a school where English was the language of instruction for at least one academic year automatically meets the requirement.

Working in Ireland afterwards

A dental degree from an EU member state that is listed in the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC, as amended) can be recognised automatically by the Dental Council of Ireland. To get this, you provide a certificate from your home country’s competent authority confirming the degree meets the Directive’s minimum training conditions, plus proof of English-language proficiency. EU dental degrees that do not qualify for automatic recognition may instead be assessed under the Directive.

If you earn income abroad and cannot submit the Italian ISEE declaration, you pay a fixed yearly contribution by country band. Ireland is in Band C: EUR 1,500 a year, paid in three instalments of EUR 450, EUR 525 and EUR 525 (fee page with 2025/26 payment deadlines; confirm the current amount). You also pay EUR 16 stamp duty and the Lazio regional tax. The IMAT test fee is paid on Universitaly and the amount is announced there when registration opens.
