About the course

A six-year medical degree taught in English, delivered in person at Sapienza in Rome. Entry is through the national IMAT exam, and students are ranked on their IMAT score.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement for this course. Sapienza’s ‘Accepted qualifications by country’ list (2026/27) covers Ireland, so check it and contact admissions to confirm. Selection is by IMAT score, not school grades.
  • IMAT (2026): 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes: biology 23, chemistry 15, physics and maths 13, logical reasoning 5 and reading comprehension 4. You score +1.5 for a correct answer, -0.4 for a wrong one and 0 for a blank. EU candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked.
  • English: the 2026/27 call accepts listed certificates (for example IELTS or Cambridge), and anyone who attended a school where English was the language of instruction for at least one academic year automatically meets the requirement.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

  4. Enrol and payIf you get a place, enrol within four days of the ranking (excluding Saturdays and public holidays), email your school-leaving documents to Sapienza’s International Student Office and pay the first instalment.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle: IMAT registration on Universitaly ran from 26 August to 9 September 2026 (3pm Italian time), and Infostud registration for those sitting the test at Sapienza ran from 7 August to 9 September 2026. The IMAT was on 29 September 2026. Scores are published on 8 October 2026 and the national ranking on 26 October 2026, with enrolment within four days (excluding Saturdays and public holidays) and the next ranking on 3 November 2026. The 2027 dates have not been published yet; expect a similar late-summer registration and September test, but check Universitaly and Sapienza..

Costs

  • Sapienza does not list a separate, higher fee for its English-taught courses. If you earn income abroad and cannot submit the Italian ISEE declaration, you pay a fixed yearly contribution by country band. Ireland is in Band C: EUR 1,500 a year, paid in three instalments of EUR 450, EUR 525 and EUR 525 (fee page with 2025/26 payment deadlines; confirm the 2026/27 and 2027/28 amounts). You also pay EUR 16 stamp duty and the Lazio regional tax. The IMAT test fee is paid on Universitaly and the amount is announced there when registration opens.
Because the degree is from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC (Annex V), as long as you meet any certificate conditions listed there, show current professional standing and meet the English requirements. Older HSE intern guides listed Italy as an eligible country but said graduates holding the Italian ‘abilitante’ degree were not eligible for intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
