About the course

A 6-year single-cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery, taught entirely in English. Teaching and clinical training are based at the San Luigi Gonzaga University Hospital site in Orbassano, just outside Turin.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. You need a secondary school qualification that gives access to university, and students with foreign qualifications must provide extra documents when they enrol.
  • Admission is through the national IMAT. It is a multiple-choice test covering reading comprehension, logical reasoning, biology, chemistry, and physics and maths. In recent years it has had 60 questions in 100 minutes, and EU candidates have needed a minimum score to be ranked. Check the exact format, scoring and minimum score in the 2027 decree.
  • English: the programme is taught entirely in English. This check did not find a published English certificate requirement for EU applicants.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Register for the IMAT on Universitaly2026 cycle: 26 Aug to 9 Sep 2026, 15:00 Italian time. Rank your preferred universities, including Turin, and pay the test fee as Universitaly tells you. The 2027 dates are not yet published.
  2. Sit the IMAT2026 test: 29 September 2026 at 11:00. The national ranking came out on Universitaly on 26 October 2026.
  3. Confirm your place and enrol on MyUniToIf you are offered a place at Turin, confirm within 4 working days of the ranking, by 15:00. Then enrol and upload: the signed application form, receipt for the first instalment, ID, Italian tax code, a photo, your vaccination certificate (with Italian translation), a TB test (Mantoux or Quantiferon) and your foreign-qualification documents.
  4. Pay fees and request the reduced ratePay the EUR 156 first instalment when you enrol. As a student resident abroad, request the GDP-based flat fee by 20 Nov 2026 (the 2026/27 deadline) to avoid a EUR 150 penalty.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle (2026/27 entry): IMAT registration on Universitaly ran from 26 August to 9 September 2026, 15:00 Italian time. The test was on 29 September 2026 at 11:00, with a Turin venue at the School of Management and Economics, Via Filadelfia 73. The national ranking is published on Universitaly on 26 October 2026. If you are offered a place, you must confirm within 4 working days (not counting Saturdays and holidays), by 15:00 on the last day. The dates for 2027 entry are not yet published. Expect a similar timetable in late summer and autumn 2027, and check the new ministerial decree..

Costs

  • Turin does not charge one flat price. Students resident abroad, including EU citizens, can ask for a flat fee based on their country’s GDP per head (PPP). For the highest band (over EUR 60,000) this is EUR 1,500 a year in years 1-2 and EUR 1,650 from year 3. The university’s page does not name Ireland, but Ireland’s GDP per head puts it in this band. Everyone also pays a first instalment of EUR 156 (regional tax plus stamp duty) at enrolment. For 2026/27 you must request the reduced fee by 20 November 2026. Between 21 November 2026 and 26 February 2027 there is a EUR 150 penalty, and after that you pay the maximum fee. You also pay a separate IMAT registration fee on Universitaly.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC (Annex V), as long as you also meet the professional standing and English-language requirements. In the 2022 HSE intern guide, Italian graduates holding the ‘abilitante’ degree could not apply for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for general registration, so check the current HSE guide for the year you apply.
