About the course

A 6-year single-cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery (360 ECTS) taught in English at San Raffaele in Milan, a private university, with clinical training at San Raffaele Hospital. Entry is by the university’s own admission test, not IMAT.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. You can apply in your final school year. At enrolment you need proof that your qualification is listed on the ARDI platform, a CIMEA Statement of Comparability (preferred) or a Declaration of Value from the Italian consulate.
  • UniSR runs its own home-based online admission test: 60 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes. There are 36 questions on logic, problem solving and reading comprehension, and 24 on biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Each correct answer scores +1, each wrong answer -0.25 and each blank 0. There are two sessions and both are covered by the one application fee.
  • English: you need an official C1 (CEFR) certificate at enrolment. You are exempt if you attended at least the last two years of secondary school, or two consecutive years of college, entirely in English. Italian is not tested.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 entry cycle (2027 dates not yet published): EU applications ran from 17 December 2025 to 6 February 2026 at 12:00 noon Italian time. If you have a non-Italian school qualification, such as the Leaving Cert, you had to register at least 5 days before the deadline. The home-based online test ran on 14 February 2026 (Session I) and 14 March 2026 (Session II), with a technical check-in the day before. The ranking was published within 15 days of the last session. Admitted candidates declared their intention to enrol between 9 and 22 June 2026, and online enrolment ran from 1 to 20 July 2026. Expect a similar timetable for 2027 entry, but confirm the dates in the new call for admission..

Costs

  • UniSR is a private university and its fee page does not set a different fee for EU and non-EU students on this programme. For students starting in 2026/27 the fee is EUR 20,690 a year, paid in three instalments: EUR 7,190 when you enrol, EUR 7,000 by 31 January and EUR 6,500 by 31 March. There is also a non-refundable application fee of EUR 200, which covers both test sessions. The 2027/28 fee had not been published when we checked. UniSR says it offers financial aid and merit awards.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). Older HSE intern guides (for example 2022) said Italian ‘abilitante’ degree holders were not eligible for Irish intern posts because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
