About the course

A six-year single-cycle master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (class LM-41), taught in English. It is run by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the Torrette di Ancona campus.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The call asks for a secondary school qualification obtained after at least 12 years of schooling that gives access to university in the country where it was issued.
  • Entry is by the national IMAT: 60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes (4 reading ability, 5 logical reasoning, 23 biology, 15 chemistry, 13 physics and mathematics). EU candidates need at least 20 points to be ranked.
  • English: you need either one of the English certificates listed in Attachment 3 to Ministerial Decree 1005 (6 August 2026), or at least one school year taught in English. Irish students schooled through English should meet the second option, but confirm with admissions (especially if you attended an Irish-medium school).

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Register for the IMATRegister in the IMAT section of Universitaly and pay the test fee. For 2026 the window was 26 August to 9 September 2026 (3pm Italian time). Choose UNIVPM Ancona among your preferences and pick a test venue.
  2. Sit the IMATThe exam is in late September (29 September 2026 in this cycle), in Ancona or at an approved centre abroad. You need at least 20 points to be ranked.
  3. Check the national rankingThe ranking is published in late October (26 October 2026 in this cycle). If you are assigned a place at UNIVPM, enrol within four working days or you lose it.
  4. Enrol and payComplete enrolment through UNIVPM’s procedure, including your Leaving Certificate documents, and pay the €156 first instalment. Submit an ISEE parificato if you want income-based fees; otherwise the maximum contribution applies.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle: register for the IMAT on Universitaly from 26 August to 9 September 2026 (3pm Italian time). The IMAT was held on 29 September 2026 (1.30pm Italian time), in Ancona or at an approved test centre abroad. The national ranking is published on 26 October 2026. If you are assigned a place, you must enrol within four working days (including the day the ranking is updated), and places are then reallocated in later ranking updates. Dates for 2027 entry have not been published yet. Expect a similar timetable (registration in late summer, exam in September), but confirm the dates when the 2027/28 call is released..

Costs

  • Fees are income-based and made of two parts. Every student pays a fixed first instalment of €156 (€140 regional tax plus €16 stamp duty). On top of that there is a variable contribution. For Medicine and Surgery (including the English-taught course) the maximum variable contribution is €3,236 a year, so the most you would pay is about €3,392 a year in 2026/27. Under the university’s fee rules, students from OECD countries such as Ireland who do not submit an ISEE income certificate (the ‘ISEE parificato’ for foreign income) pay the maximum. Students with an ISEE of €28,000 or less pay only the €156. There is also an IMAT test fee, paid on Universitaly when you register; the UNIVPM call does not state the amount.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V. In older HSE intern guides, Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree were told they were not eligible for Irish intern posts, because they qualify directly for General registration, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
