About the course

An integrated medical degree taught in English at Vilnius University, moving from basic sciences to clinical training. Students also take compulsory, free Lithuanian language classes for six semesters.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Biology (or Natural Sciences) is mandatory; Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics are an advantage.
  • Applicants sit an online entrance exam (EUR 200) and submit a motivation letter. Exemption from the exam is possible with a qualifying score: MCAT 500+, BMAT (Sections 1 and 2 score 5, Section 3 score 3B or better), IMAT 50+ or NEET 650+, or with listed school qualifications such as A-levels with A in Biology and Chemistry.
  • English: IELTS Academic 6.5+, TOEFL iBT 81+, Cambridge 176+, PTE Academic 59+, Duolingo 120+ or equivalent B2 level; exemption if English is your first language or your degree was taught in English.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Check eligibilityMake sure you have Leaving Cert Biology and an English certificate or exemption. Ask admissions how your Leaving Cert results will be assessed.
  2. Apply onlineCreate an account at apply.vu.lt, upload your documents and motivation letter, and pay the EUR 100 fee. For 2026 the EU deadline was 1 July.
  3. Sit the entrance examBook one of the online exam dates (2026: January to July) and pay EUR 200 at least 48 hours in advance, unless exempt with a qualifying MCAT, BMAT, IMAT or NEET score.
  4. Accept and payIf offered a place, pay the first-year tuition and prepare for a 1 September start.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For the 2026 intake the deadline for EU/EFTA citizens was 1 July (non-EU: 1 May), with studies starting on 1 September. Online entrance exams in 2026 were held on 22 Jan, 26 Feb, 19 Mar, 16 Apr, 14 May, 18 Jun and 16 Jul (14:00 Lithuanian time). The 2027 dates were not yet published when checked..

Costs

  • EUR 14,100 per year for a non-state-funded place, which is how international applicants on the English programme are admitted. There is also a non-refundable EUR 100 application fee (covers up to 3 programmes) and a non-refundable EUR 200 entrance exam fee, paid at least 48 hours before the exam. These are 2026 figures; confirm for 2027.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC (Annex V), and older HSE intern guides listed Lithuanian graduates as eligible to apply for Irish intern posts; check the current HSE intern guide when you apply. Lithuanian classes are compulsory for six semesters (free), with B2 level expected by the end of the programme.
