About the course

A four-year (240 ECTS) programme taught in English that combines sociology, anthropology and communication. Topics include cultural diversity, deviance, public relations, and qualitative and quantitative research methods. Electives cover areas such as migration, gender studies and journalism.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • VMU publishes no specific Leaving Cert conversion. International applicants need a school-leaving certificate with a minimum average of 60%. Ask VMU admissions how it converts Leaving Cert grades (H1-H8, O1-O8) and whether it will make an offer on provisional results.
  • VMU’s 2026 admission rules weight the competitive score 40% History, 40% Mathematics and 20% English. Ask VMU how this applies if you did not take Leaving Cert History. There is no entrance exam, but VMU holds an online motivational interview, and you send a motivation letter and a CV in English.
  • English: you need B2 level. VMU accepts, for example, IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 87-109, Cambridge FCE 161-180 or Duolingo 100-125. Native speakers and applicants educated in English are exempt if they send an official document from their school. Ask VMU to confirm that a letter from an Irish school is enough.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather your Leaving Cert results (or predicted/provisional results), passport copy, photo, CV and motivation letter. Ask your school for a letter confirming you were taught through English.
  2. Apply on DreamApplyApply on VMU’s DreamApply portal once the 2027 intake opens (early November 2026) and pay the EUR 150 application fee. In the 2026 cycle the EU deadline was 1 July.
  3. Interview and recognitionDo the online motivational interview. VMU assesses your qualification once it has all your documents, then sends its decision.
  4. Pay and enrolPay the first-year fee (EUR 3,250 for EU students in 2026/27) by the invoice deadline. Studies provisionally begin on 23 August 2027.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026 entry, VMU’s 2026 admission rules set the deadline for EU applicants and applicants from visa-free countries at 1 July 2026 (non-EU: 1 May). VMU says applications for the 2027 autumn intake open at the beginning of November 2026, with studies provisionally starting on 23 August 2027. Check the 2027 deadline once it is published..

Costs

  • VMU’s tuition-fees page lists EUR 3,250 a year for EU/EFTA citizens in 2026/27 (non-EU: EUR 3,400; the programme page shows only the EUR 3,400 figure). There is also a non-refundable EUR 150 application fee. The 2027/28 fee has not been published yet, so confirm it on the VMU tuition fees page.
This is a fee-paying place that you apply for directly through VMU’s DreamApply portal. Budget for about EUR 3,250 a year plus the EUR 150 application fee. The score weights History and Maths heavily, so ask VMU early how it treats Leaving Cert subjects.
