About the course

A four-year (240 ECTS) programme taught in English at VU’s Faculty of Philology. It develops English to C1–C2 level alongside linguistics, literature and cultural studies, with training in academic writing, creative writing and translation. Graduates go into education, translation, publishing, media and cultural institutions, or on to postgraduate study.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Vilnius University accepts the Leaving Certificate. For a Leaving Cert awarded from 2017 onwards you need passes in at least six subjects: two at H5 or higher and the rest at O6/H7 or higher. Provisional certificates are accepted from current school-leavers.
  • No specific Leaving Cert subjects are listed. Applicants who meet the criteria are invited to a motivational interview.
  • English: VU asks for B2 level, for example IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 81 or Cambridge 176. Applicants whose first language is English, or who have a university degree in English, are exempt. Confirm with VU how an Irish applicant should show this.

How to apply

  1. Check eligibilityMake sure your Leaving Cert meets VU’s six-subject rule (two at H5 or higher, the rest at O6/H7 or higher), and work out how you will meet the English requirement.
  2. Apply on apply.vu.ltChoose up to three programmes, pay the EUR 100 application fee and upload your documents before the EU deadline (1 July in 2026; check the 2027 date).
  3. Motivational interviewIf you meet the criteria, VU invites you to a motivational interview. Accept any offer within the time VU sets.
  4. Final results and feesUpload your final Leaving Cert results by VU’s final-documents date and pay first-year tuition as your offer instructs.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026 entry the EU/EFTA deadline was 1 July (1 May for non-EU applicants), applying on apply.vu.lt. The 2026/27 round is now closed and 2027 dates are not yet published, but expect a similar timeline. Check apply.vu.lt for the 2027 date..

Costs

  • EUR 4,437 a year for a non-state-funded place (2026/27 figure from VU’s programme and apply.vu.lt pages; the 2027/28 fee is not yet published). There is also a non-refundable EUR 100 application fee, which covers up to three programme choices. EU citizens can also compete for tuition-free state-funded places through LAMA BPO, but competition is tough and the Leaving Cert must first be recognised by SKVC.
EU students on self-funded places pay tuition. Tuition-free state-funded places are only available through the separate LAMA BPO system, which needs early SKVC recognition of the Leaving Cert.
