About the course

A four-year (240 ECTS) Bachelor in Humanities, taught in English at VU’s Faculty of Philology. It is for people interested in Lithuania, including members of the Lithuanian diaspora. Students learn the Lithuanian language and study the country’s culture, literature, history, society and politics, along with the wider Baltic region.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Vilnius University accepts the Leaving Cert. For a Leaving Cert awarded from 2017 onwards you need passes in at least six subjects: two at H5 or higher and the rest at O6/H7 or higher. Provisional certificates are accepted from current school-leavers.
  • No specific Leaving Cert subjects are listed. Applicants who meet the criteria are invited to a motivational interview.
  • English: VU asks for B2 level, for example IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 81, Cambridge 176, PTE 59 or Duolingo 120. Native speakers and those with a university degree in English are exempt. Confirm with VU how an Irish applicant should show this.

How to apply

  1. Check requirementsConfirm you will have six Leaving Cert passes (two at H5 or higher) and decide how you will prove English, either by a test on VU’s list or by an exemption VU confirms applies to you.
  2. Apply on apply.vu.ltCreate an account, upload your documents and pay the EUR 100 application fee (up to three choices). The EU deadline in 2026 was 1 July; check the 2027 date.
  3. Motivational interviewIf you meet the criteria you will be invited to a motivational interview about why you want to take the programme.
  4. Accept, pay and send resultsAccept your offer within 7 working days and pay tuition within 15 calendar days, as VU’s page states, then submit your final Leaving Cert results by VU’s final-documents date.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For the 2026 intake the EU/EFTA deadline was 1 July (1 May for non-EU applicants), and the 2026/27 round is now closed. 2027 dates are not yet published, so confirm them on apply.vu.lt. For a state-funded place via LAMA BPO, you must first have your Leaving Cert recognised by SKVC, so start that early..

Costs

  • EUR 4,437 a year for a self-funded place (2026/27 figure from VU’s official pages); VU says fees may change in line with national legislation, and the 2027/28 fee is not yet published. There is also a non-refundable EUR 100 application fee covering up to three programme choices. EU citizens can also compete for a tuition-free state-funded place through LAMA BPO, but most of those places are on Lithuanian-taught courses and competition is tough.
This is a niche programme: you study Lithuanian language and culture through English, and you pay the published fee unless you win a state-funded place through LAMA BPO, which needs early SKVC recognition.
