About the course

This is the University of Latvia’s English studies degree, taught in English and leading to a Bachelor of Humanities in English and Language Studies (180 ECTS, 3 years full-time). Students choose one of three study tracks: English Language, English and Scandinavian Languages, or European Languages with Business Studies. It is taught in central Riga.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • No Leaving Cert grade formula is written into LU’s rules. EU applicants need a general secondary school certificate with every grade a pass (at least 4 out of 10 on the Latvian scale), and the certificate must qualify you for university entry in your home country. LU does not publish how Higher or Ordinary Level grades (H1-H8, O1-O8) convert to its scale, so confirm with LU admissions. The extra average-grade and SAT rules apply only to non-EU applicants.
  • All applicants take an online interview as part of admission. No specific maths level is listed.
  • English: LU does not ask for IELTS or another English test if your previous education was in English in a listed English-speaking country, and Ireland is on that list, so the Leaving Cert should be enough.

How to apply

  1. Check the 2027 detailsLook up the programme on apply.lu.lv once the 2027 cycle opens (it opened on 1 December for 2026 entry). Confirm the EU fee, the study tracks and the deadline (16 August in 2026).
  2. Apply on apply.lu.lvCreate an account, upload your school certificate and results with an English copy, your passport and photo, and pay the €170 non-refundable application fee. Leaving Cert results usually come out in late August, so ask LU how to apply before you have final results.
  3. Online interviewTake the online interview when invited. LU also checks that your Leaving Cert qualifies you for university entry, so answer any document requests quickly.
  4. Accept and enrolAccept your offer, pay the €170 registration fee and your tuition, bring your original certificates to Riga, and register your residence as an EU citizen before classes start (31 August in 2026).
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026 entry, the University of Latvia’s deadline for EU/EEA applicants to bachelor programmes was 16 August 2026 (5 July 2026 for state-funded places). Applications for 2026 opened on 1 December 2025. The 2027 dates were not yet published when checked in September 2026. Expect a similar timetable, but confirm on the LU website and apply early..

Costs

  • The University of Latvia’s programme page lists €2,600 a year for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens studying full-time in 2026/27 (€3,500 for other nationalities; the apply.lu.lv listing shows only the €3,500 figure, so confirm with LU that the EU rate is applied to you). There is a non-refundable €170 application fee and a non-refundable €170 registration fee if you enrol. Your Leaving Cert may also need a recognition check, which can carry a separate charge; ask LU. The programme also has a small number of state-funded (free) places, but these have an earlier deadline and you should ask LU whether you can compete for them.
This course is not free for most Irish students: budget €2,600 a year (EU rate) plus €170 application and €170 registration fees. Leaving Cert results come out in late August, after LU’s mid-August deadline, so contact LU admissions early about timing.
