About the course

This is a four-year, 240-ECTS honours degree in midwifery, taught in English at the University of Malta. Supervised clinical practice units run through the course.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The general entry requirement is 6 Higher Level passes: 2 at H2, 2 at H3 and 2 at H6. These must include a language, a science and a humanistic subject. The course also asks for a pass in Biology at Advanced Level, or grade C or better at Intermediate Level. The university counts H6 as Intermediate Level grade C, so HL Biology at H6 or better meets this.
  • There is no entrance exam, and the course page does not mention an interview. Places are limited to 18. For English, the university accepts Leaving Cert English at Ordinary Level O4 or better, or a valid Secure English Language Test (SELT).

Working in Ireland afterwards

Midwifery qualifications from EU/EEA countries go through the same NMBI process as nursing: recognition first, then registration. Qualifications listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC can use the G1 automatic recognition pathway, where NMBI only checks your paperwork. Others may be assessed under the general system (G2) and may need a compensation measure; NMBI has adaptation guidance for midwives. Your group is decided through NMBI’s MyNMBI tool, and English-language requirements apply.

Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For October 2026 entry, applicants with overseas qualifications had to apply online by 22 July 2026 at 14:00 (CEST). The university does not accept late applications for courses with a limited number of places, and this course is limited to 18 students, so do not rely on the late window. The deadlines for October 2027 entry have not been published yet, so check the university’s Dates and Deadlines page..

Costs

  • The course page lists a tuition fee of €10,800 a year for non-EU nationals. We could not confirm the EU/EEA fee because the page’s EU view did not load. Check it on the course page by switching to ‘EU nationals’. For October 2026 entry, applicants with overseas qualifications paid a €100 application fee.
Midwifery qualifications from EU/EEA countries go through NMBI recognition and then registration. Qualifications listed in Annex V can use the G1 automatic pathway, others may need a compensation measure, and MyNMBI tells you which group you are in. English-language requirements apply.
