About the course

A five-year MBBS awarded by Queen Mary University of London and taught in English by faculty staff and local clinicians, on a campus in the grounds of Gozo General Hospital. The course is accredited by the UK General Medical Council.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Five Higher Level subjects at H1, H1, H2, H2, H2 or better, including H1 in Chemistry or Biology and a second science subject.
  • UCAT is compulsory with no exemptions: a total score below the third decile will not progress past shortlisting, and SJT Band 4 is not considered. Shortlisted applicants have a 20 to 30 minute online panel interview (two interviewers) on Microsoft Teams, with a pre-read article and structured questions; notes are not allowed.
  • English: GCSE English Language or IELTS 7.0 overall taken within two years; other tests on the university’s list are also accepted. The page does not say whether Leaving Certificate English counts, so check with admissions. You must be at least 18 when the course starts.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Sit the UCATBook and sit the UCAT. You need a total score in the third decile or above, and SJT Band 4 is not considered. The university allows it to be sat up to 31 July of the entry year, but it is used for shortlisting, so sit it early.
  2. Apply on MySISApply directly to the Malta Campus online between 1 October 2026 and 1 March 2027. There is no application fee. Use the university’s application checklist to gather your documents.
  3. Online interviewIf shortlisted, attend a 20 to 30 minute panel interview on Microsoft Teams (interviews run from December). Results usually come about two weeks later.
  4. Offer and feesMeet your offer conditions (H1, H1, H2, H2, H2 at Higher Level, including H1 in Chemistry or Biology and a second science). Return acceptance documents and pay the deposit by the date in your offer letter, then complete occupational health and police checks.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Applications for September 2027 entry open on 1 October 2026 through the MySIS online portal, and the deadline is 1 March 2027. The UCAT is compulsory; the university says that if you have not yet sat it you may sit it in the year of entry up to 31 July, but your UCAT score is used for shortlisting, so sitting it early is sensible. Interviews run from December on Microsoft Teams, and results usually come about two weeks after the interview..

Costs

  • Tuition for students starting in September 2026 is €39,500 a year, the same for UK, EU and international students. Fees for 2027 entry are not yet published, and the university says fees rise each year on an inflationary basis and/or in line with government policy. You can pay in full before enrolment or pay 50% up front and the rest later in the year (for 2026 entry, by 31 January 2027). There is no application fee, but a deposit is payable when you accept an offer (amount not published). The final-year elective is self-funded: some host institutions charge up to £6,000 (about €7,000), plus flights and accommodation.
The Irish automatic-recognition route (EU Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V) applies to medical degrees from EU/EEA countries, but this MBBS is awarded by Queen Mary University of London, a UK university, so confirm with the Medical Council of Ireland before applying, as the university itself advises. Teaching is in English, but some patient conversations on placement may be in Maltese, with the doctor explaining them to you in English.
