About the course

A 3-year physics degree covering areas from quantum mechanics to cosmology, with experimental work, computational problem-solving and mathematical modelling. In Year 3 you write a research dissertation and specialise in Space Sciences, Electromagnetics or Quantum Physics. UM states that its language of instruction is English.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • UM’s rule for Irish Leaving Certificate holders is 6 Higher Level passes: 2 at H2, 2 at H3 and 2 at H6. These must include Higher Level passes in a language, a science and a humanistic subject.
  • Special Course Requirement for Physics: either Physics at Advanced Level Grade C or better plus Pure Mathematics at Intermediate Level Grade C or better, or Pure Mathematics at Advanced Level Grade C or better plus Physics at Intermediate Level Grade C or better. UM does not publish how Leaving Cert grades convert to these levels, so ask UM Admissions which Higher Level Physics and Maths grades count. Expect to need Higher Level Physics and Higher Level Maths.
  • English: Ordinary Level English at grade O4 or better in the Leaving Cert meets UM’s English requirement. An approved English test (SELT) is also accepted.

How to apply

  1. Check requirementsRead UM’s Ireland country page and the course’s Special Course Requirements, then ask UM Admissions which Leaving Cert Physics and Maths grades count as Advanced and Intermediate Level passes.
  2. Apply on eApplicationsApplications usually open in November for the following October. Apply on UM’s eApplications portal before the 2027 deadline on the Dates and Deadlines page.
  3. Send Leaving Cert resultsAsk UM Admissions how and when to send your Leaving Cert results, which come out in late August, and upload them as soon as you have them.
  4. Accept and registerAccept your offer, complete registration and arrange accommodation in Malta before teaching starts in October.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: UM’s academic year starts in October, and UM says you can apply online from the previous November. The 2027 closing date is not yet published. For the October 2026 intake the late deadline was 15 September 2026 at 14:00, but deadlines vary by course and intake, so check UM’s Dates and Deadlines page for 2027. Ask UM Admissions how to apply while you are still waiting for Leaving Cert results..

Costs

  • The course page lists a fee of €10,800 a year for non-EU students only and gives no EU figure. EU/EEA students are generally understood to pay no tuition for a first full-time bachelor’s degree at UM, but this could not be confirmed on UM’s fees pages for 2027/28. Check with UM for any administrative or late-application charges. Accommodation and living costs are not covered.
There is no CAO-style system: you apply directly to UM. The general entry rule for Leaving Cert holders is demanding (two H2s and two H3s), and you also need Physics and Maths for this course. Confirm the 2027 deadline and EU fee with UM.
