About the course

A 6-year, 360 ECTS medical degree taught in English at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. Admission is by an online interview in English combined with school performance.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. You must have finished an accredited secondary school, and your diploma must give access to university in your home country and be recognised by Romania’s Ministry of Education.
  • Selection is by an online interview in English lasting 15 to 30 minutes on the university’s published scientific topics, combined with your school performance, scored using the university’s evaluation grid. There is no written entrance exam.
  • English at B2 level or above: an internationally recognised certificate not older than 2 years, a school diploma from an English-language school, or a B2 result in your school-leaving exam.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Costs

  • EUR 10,000 per year for the English-taught programme in 2026/27. All 300 English-programme places are fee-paying (no state-funded places), so EU students pay this fee too. There is a non-refundable competition registration fee of 2,500 lei (roughly EUR 500), paid by bank card on the platform. To confirm a place after the results you pay 50% of the tuition fee within the confirmation window (2026: 13 to 15 July). Check the university’s 2026/27 fee schedule for any other charges.
Because this medical degree is from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V; you also need proof of current professional standing and must meet the English-language requirements. Eligibility of EU graduates for Irish HSE intern posts has been restricted to certain countries in past guides, so check the current HSE intern guide for the year you apply.
