About the course

A six-year (360 ECTS) medical degree taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine in Cluj-Napoca. International students also take compulsory Romanian language classes in years 1 to 3.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Its published general criteria look at your final school-leaving average and your scores in specific subjects (biology, chemistry and physics are named), plus language certificates, relevant volunteering or work experience and recommendation letters. No weights or minimum grades are published.
  • No entrance exam and no interview: a faculty-approved commission evaluates your application file against general and faculty-specific criteria.
  • English at B2 level or above: a certificate is required unless you completed your secondary studies fully in English.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather your passport, Leaving Certificate results and school documents (legalised/apostilled as required), a recent medical certificate (issued within 6 months), the signed application annexes and, if needed, an English certificate at B2 level or above.
  2. Apply onlineCreate an account on admissions.umfcluj.ro, upload your file and pay the EUR 300 processing fee. In 2026, Session I closed 20 May, Session II closed 16 July and an extra round for Medicine (English) closed 12 August.
  3. Get your resultA faculty commission evaluates the file. In 2026, results came out on 3 June (Session I), 28 July (Session II) and 20 August (extra round). If you are not admitted in Session I you stay in Session II without paying again.
  4. Confirm your placePay half of the EUR 10,000 annual tuition (non-refundable) by the deadline (16 June or 6 August in 2026). EU students’ studies must then be recognised by Romania’s CNRED, and enrolment takes place in the last two weeks of September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle: Session I ran 25 March to 20 May 2026 (results 3 June, confirm place by 16 June). Session II ran 21 May to 16 July 2026 (results 28 July, confirm by 6 August). For Medicine (English) the university then reopened applications until 12 August 2026, with results on 20 August. No entrance exam or interview. Dates for 2027 entry had not been published at the time of checking; expect a similar spring/summer timetable..

Costs

  • EUR 10,000 per year. The university publishes one tuition fee for international candidates, and places on the English line are fee-paying (self-paid), so expect to pay it as an EU student. There is also a non-refundable file processing fee of EUR 300, and to confirm your place you must pay half of the annual tuition, which is non-refundable. These are 2026/27 figures; 2027/28 fees were not yet published.
Because this medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (you also need proof of professional standing and English); in the 2022 HSE intern guide Romanian graduates were not on the list eligible for Irish intern posts, so check the current guide. Romanian language is compulsory for international students in years 1 to 3, with an eliminatory Romanian test at the end of year 3.
