About the course

A six-year, full-time undergraduate medical degree (licenta) taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine in Sibiu. EU applicants take an English test and an interview in English on Biology and Chemistry. Romanian language is taught as a compulsory subject across several years of the course.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university does not publish a specific Irish Leaving Certificate requirement. You need a school-leaving (baccalaureate) diploma or equivalent, so the Leaving Certificate should qualify, but confirm with admissions (admitere.medicina@ulbsibiu.ro) what recognition paperwork you need.
  • EU/EEA applicants are selected by an on-site interview in English on Biology and Chemistry, held in front of the admission committee in Sibiu. The minimum admission mark is 5.00 out of 10. Ties are broken on your school-leaving average.
  • The interview covers basic Biology (the nervous, endocrine, musculoskeletal, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory and reproductive systems) and Chemistry (bonding, acids and bases, solutions and pH, types of organic compound), so Leaving Cert Biology and Chemistry are a strong advantage.
  • English: you must either hold an accepted certificate (for example Cambridge FCE, CAE or CPE at B2 or higher, IELTS 5.0 or higher, or TOEFL iBT 86 or higher) or pass the university’s English test, which you fail if you do not pass. The 2026 rules do not say native speakers are exempt.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

Costs

  • The course catalogue gives the tuition fee as the equivalent in Romanian lei of 7,000 euro a year. For year 1 it lists 36,400 RON, paid in instalments, with a first instalment of 14,560 RON. Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1).
