About the course

A six-year medical degree taught in English at a private university in Bucharest. You get in through an in-person multiple-choice exam in Biology and Chemistry or Physics, and clinical training comes in the later years.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • There is no fixed Irish requirement: you need a school-leaving diploma (the Leaving Certificate) and your school record, and admission then depends on the entrance exam. Contact admissions to confirm how the Leaving Certificate is handled.
  • Admission exam (2026 format): taken in person at the Bucharest campus, 2 hours, 60 multiple-choice questions. 40 are on Biology (compulsory) and 20 on Chemistry or Physics (your choice). Minimum pass mark 5 out of 10, and places are given in order of exam score.
  • English: a B1 certificate (for example IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge) is required. Candidates from countries where English is an official language, or with school-leaving documents issued in English, are exempt. Irish applicants should normally fall under this exemption, but confirm with admissions.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather your passport, Leaving Certificate and school record, birth certificate, a medical certificate from the current year, three passport photos (3/4 size) and, if you need one, an English certificate. The university asks for certified Romanian translations of your diploma and transcripts, so ask admissions exactly what is needed for Irish documents.
  2. Register onlineRegister and upload your documents (PDF, JPEG or PNG) on the university’s online admission portal during the registration period (29 June to 11 September in 2026). Pay the admission fee.
  3. Sit the exam in BucharestTake the in-person multiple-choice exam in Biology plus Chemistry or Physics (16 September in 2026). You need at least 5 out of 10.
  4. Confirm your placeIf admitted, pay at least the first tuition instalment and hand in your original documents by the confirmation deadline (25 September in 2026).
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: The 2027 calendar has not been published yet. For 2026 entry, online registration ran from 29 June to 11 September 2026. The admission exam was on 16 September, final results on 21 September, and admitted students had to confirm their place and hand in original documents by 25 September 2026. Expect a similar timetable for 2027, but check the university’s admission page for the official dates..

Costs

  • Titu Maiorescu is a private university and charges tuition to EU students. The most recent amounts shown on the university’s programme page are from the 2018-19 schedule: EUR 7,000 a year for EU/EEA/Swiss students in Years 1-2 and EUR 3,000 a year in Years 3-6 (non-EU: EUR 9,000 in Years 1-2 and EUR 7,500 in Years 3-6). The 2026 admission page does not state the amounts. So treat these as a guide only, not a confirmed 2027/28 fee. EU students admitted in 2026 had to pay at least the first instalment by 25 September. You also pay one-off non-refundable fees: an admission fee and a fee for processing your file with the Romanian Ministry of Education (each shown as 450 RON, roughly EUR 90, in the older schedule). Confirm the current fees with the university.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1); you must also show current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Check the current HSE intern guide for how EU graduates are treated for intern posts.
