About the course

A three-year computer science degree, taught in English, covering programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering and the mathematics that supports them. The same degree is also taught in Romanian, Hungarian and German.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • As an EU applicant you need a recognition certificate from CNRED, Romania’s national recognition centre, before you apply (the fee is 100 lei, it takes about 30 days, and your Irish documents need an Apostille). After that you apply on the same terms and calendar as Romanian applicants. For this course your Leaving Cert grades do not decide the ranking: the entrance test does.
  • Admission is decided entirely (100%) by a written multiple-choice test in Mathematics or Informatics (you choose which when you apply), sat in Cluj-Napoca in July or September. Strong Higher Level Maths is the best preparation. Past papers are on the faculty website.
  • English-taught programmes ask for proof of English at B2 level in every skill tested (Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL and similar are accepted). The faculty does not say whether the Irish Leaving Cert counts, so ask admitere.cs@ubbcluj.ro before booking a test.

How to apply

  1. Get your CNRED recognition (spring 2027)Apply to CNRED for recognition of your Leaving Cert as soon as your results are available. Get your documents apostilled first, and allow about 30 days.
  2. Get your English proof readyGet a B2-level certificate (e.g. IELTS or Cambridge), or have the faculty confirm in writing that your Leaving Cert is enough.
  3. Apply online (mid-July 2027)Register on admitere.ubbcluj.ro, choose Computer Science in English and pick Maths or Informatics for the test. Pay the admission fee. In 2026 the window was 13–16 July.
  4. Sit the test in Cluj and confirm your placeSit the multiple-choice test in person (17 July in 2026). Then confirm your place within the deadline once results are out. A September session runs if places are left.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Based on the 2026 cycle: online applications ran 13–16 July 2026 (the platform closed at 08:00 on 16 July), and the written test was on 17 July 2026. A second session for any remaining places had applications on 7–9 September 2026. The 2027 dates are not yet published. Your CNRED recognition certificate must be ready before you apply..

Costs

  • Fee-paying places cost 6,400 lei a year in 2026/27 (roughly €1,260; the university charges in lei). It can be paid in four instalments, with a 10% discount for paying in full up front. A small number of state-funded (tuition-free) places are also open to EU citizens on the same terms as Romanians. The one-off admission charge in 2026 was 400 lei (50 lei processing plus 350 lei admission), paid online.
Your place depends only on a multiple-choice Maths or Informatics test sat in person in Cluj in July, not on your Leaving Cert points. Also, you cannot apply until CNRED has recognised your Leaving Cert, so start early.
