About the course

A six-year medical degree taught in the English section in Iasi, north-east Romania. There is no entrance exam: applicants are scored on their school record and supporting documents and must pass a short online interview.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. Two evaluators score your file using the 2026/27 evaluation grid: points for grades in the two school years before your final year, any previous degrees, certified volunteering, secondary schooling in the language of study (English) and up to two recommendation letters in English.
  • No entrance exam. Every applicant must pass an online interview of up to 10 minutes in English. It is pass/fail and cannot be appealed.
  • English at B2 level or higher is required, but the 2026/27 methodology lists Ireland among the countries whose citizens are exempt from the language certificate.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare documentsGather certified copies of your school transcripts for the two years before your final year, your birth certificate, passport pages, medical certificate, recommendation letters and the signed study framework agreement. Irish school documents are exempt from the apostille under the 2026/27 methodology.
  2. Apply onlineUpload your file on registration.umfiasi.ro and pay the EUR 200 processing fee. In 2026 the window ran from March to 25 May.
  3. Online interviewRegister for the online interview of up to 10 minutes in English (in 2026 registration closed on 9 June). It is pass/fail.
  4. Confirm your placeIf admitted, pay 2/3 of the EUR 9,000 fee within two weeks (by 7 July in 2026) and the rest by 20 July, then register in late September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle (2027 dates not yet published): a single admission session ran from March to July 2026. International applications closed on 25 May 2026 (extended), registration for the online interview closed on 9 June 2026, 2/3 of the fee was due by 7 July 2026 and the balance by 20 July 2026. First-year registration began on 21 September 2026. Expect similar timing for 2027 entry, but confirm with the university..

Costs

  • EUR 9,000 per year for the English section in 2026/27 (up from EUR 8,500 in 2025/26). In first year you secure your place by paying a non-refundable 2/3 of the fee within two weeks of being told you are admitted (by 7 July in the 2026 cycle), and the rest by 20 July. From second year the fee is paid in three instalments. The 2026/27 methodology also lists a non-refundable EUR 200 application processing fee, and the admissions page lists a 230 RON enrolment fee. The methodology applies the same foreign-currency admission route to EU (non-Romanian) and non-EU citizens, so Irish students should expect to pay the full fee.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1); you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements, and you should check the HSE intern guide for the year you apply to see whether you can apply for Irish intern posts. Important: you must hold a Romanian language certificate at the required level when you register for third year, or you will be expelled.
