About the course

A six-year medical degree taught in English at UMFST’s Targu Mures campus. The same faculty also runs an English-taught campus in Hamburg, Germany (UMCH). Admission runs on a rolling basis through the university’s online portal. You apply online, attend an online interview, and the university evaluates your file before sending a decision.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm.
  • Admission is by online application, an online interview and evaluation of your file. The official pages we checked do not mention a written entrance exam.
  • We could not confirm the English-language requirement. Ask the university what proof of English it accepts.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

  3. File evaluation and decisionThe university evaluates your file against its admission criteria, then emails you its decision and further instructions.
  4. Pay the deposit and confirmIf admitted, pay the deposit by the stated deadline to secure your place (EUR 5,000 in 2025, deducted from the first-year fee), then submit your documents as instructed.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026 entry the university ran rolling admission for Medicine in English, with four interview sessions between March and September 2026. That cycle is now closed. Dates for 2027 entry had not been published when we checked. The first session is likely to be in spring 2027, so apply early..

Costs

  • The university’s admission portal listed the Medicine in English tuition fee as EUR 10,000 a year for 2025-2026. The fee was EUR 8,500 in 2024-2025. Early-admission applicants in 2025 paid a EUR 5,000 deposit, which was deducted from the first-year fee. The same fee appears to apply to all applicants, with no separate EU rate shown. We could not confirm the fee for 2026-2027 or 2027-2028, so confirm the current fee, deposit and any application fee with the university before applying.
Because the degree comes from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V. This is subject to any required home-country certificate, proof of current professional standing and English-language requirements. Eligibility for HSE intern posts depends on the HSE intern guide for the year you apply, so check the current list before relying on an Irish internship.
