About the course

A six-year (360 ECTS) medical degree taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine in Timisoara, western Romania, with clinical training in the university’s affiliated hospitals.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university’s list of recognised diplomas accepts the Leaving Certificate (Ardteistiméireacht) with at least 6 subjects, ‘at least 2 of which at A level’ (the list does not explain how this maps to Higher Level). For regulated professions such as medicine it also asks for a certificate showing access to higher education in the same field, issued by a recognised Irish university. It does not publish minimum grades or required subjects. Your school-leaving average counts for 50% of your final score, and your diploma must be recognised by CNRED, so contact admissions to confirm how your Leaving Certificate will be assessed.
  • Entrance exam: a written test of 50 biology multiple-choice questions (human anatomy and physiology, 1 to 4 correct answers each), taken from a question bank of about 500 questions published on the university website. Exam grade = 3 + 7 x (score/50). Final average = (exam grade + school-leaving average) / 2, minimum 5.00. Places go to the highest-ranked applicants.
  • English: you are exempt from the university’s language test if you finished secondary school taught in English or hold a B2-level certificate (Cambridge, TOEFL, IELTS, Trinity and similar); otherwise you sit the online pass/fail test (EUR 150).

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Prepare biologyStudy the published Medicine/Dental Medicine biology question bank on umft.ro. The exam questions are taken from it.

  4. Confirm your placeIf admitted, pay the EUR 300 confirmation fee and the 50% tuition advance (29-31 July in 2026), then complete enrolment and CNRED recognition of your Leaving Certificate.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: 2026 cycle (the 2027 calendar is not yet published): July session registration 25 May to 20 July 2026 (2pm Romanian time); online language tests 23 July 2026; written entrance exam 27 July 2026 at 10am in Timisoara; place confirmation stage I 29-31 July 2026. A September session (registration 1-4 September, exam 10 September 2026) runs only if places remain; in 2026 no EU Medicine places were left for it. Expect similar dates for 2027 and confirm on the university website..

Costs

  • EUR 9,000 per year for Medicine (2026/27 fee list for type III admission, which covers EU citizens). EU students pay tuition on this English-taught programme. One-off costs: EUR 200 file processing fee (non-refundable once documents are checked), EUR 150 language test fee if you are not exempt, EUR 300 place confirmation fee (non-refundable), a non-refundable 50% tuition advance when you confirm your place, and a 100 RON enrolment fee paid in cash at the university cashier.
Because this is an EU medical degree, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1); you must also show current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Eligibility for HSE intern posts depends on the current HSE intern guide: Romanian graduates were not on the eligible list in the 2022 guide, so check the guide for the year you apply.
