About the course

A 180-credit, full-time campus programme in Östersund combining natural, social and engineering sciences, leading to a Bachelor of Science with a major in Environmental Engineering. Teaching is problem-oriented and thematic, with field studies and theory linked to practice, elective specialisation in second year and an individual thesis often done with an outside organisation.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • University Admissions in Sweden accepts the Leaving Certificate for general entry if you took at least six subjects, with at least two at Higher Level. Only final results count; predicted grades are not accepted, and University Admissions decides whether your subjects and levels meet each requirement. Mid Sweden University publishes nothing Ireland-specific, so confirm with admissions.
  • Specific requirements: Chemistry 1 plus Mathematics 3b or 3c (Swedish upper-secondary courses), or equivalent. You will normally need Leaving Cert Chemistry and Mathematics at a level University Admissions judges equivalent; check how your subjects are assessed before applying.
  • English: a Leaving Cert English result of Ordinary Level O6 (or D) or better meets the English requirement.

How to apply

  1. Check subjectsMake sure you will have six Leaving Cert subjects (two at Higher Level) including Chemistry and Mathematics to meet the Chemistry 1 and Mathematics 3b/3c requirement.
  2. Apply on universityadmissions.seApply between 16 October 2026 and 15 January 2027 for autumn 2027, or in a later year once you have your final Leaving Cert results.
  3. Upload documentsBy 1 February 2027 upload your final Leaving Cert results and a copy of your passport or ID card as proof of EU citizenship.
  4. Results and acceptInternational-round results are published on 8 April 2027; reply to your offer on universityadmissions.se and plan for an August/September start in Östersund.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: International admissions round for autumn 2027 on universityadmissions.se: opens 16 October 2026, closes 15 January 2027; documents (including proof of citizenship) due 1 February 2027; results 8 April 2027. A second round opens 15 March 2027 and closes 15 April 2027 (documents due 21 June, with some exceptions to early July; results 9 July). For autumn 2026 this programme was listed in both rounds. Both rounds close before Leaving Cert results are issued in late August, so most school-leavers apply the following year with final results..

Costs

  • No tuition fee and no application fee for Irish and other EU/EEA citizens. You must upload a copy of your passport or national ID card as proof of EU citizenship by the document deadline, or your application is treated as late. Students from outside the EU/EEA pay fees.
Places are ranked on final grades and both application rounds close before Leaving Cert results come out, so most Irish students apply after receiving their results, for example with a gap year. You need Chemistry as well as Mathematics to meet the specific entry requirements.
