About the course

A six-year single-cycle programme taught in English, leading to the MUDr. (Medicinae universae doctor) degree. The faculty offers General Medicine in either Slovak or English. The programme combines preclinical science with clinical training at the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university assesses the Irish Leaving Certificate individually and does not publish a fixed Irish requirement. Contact admissions to confirm. The faculty states only that your secondary school certificate must be at European Qualifications Framework level 4. EU applicants do not need full nostrification. Instead they need a recognition statement, which is only valid with a notarised copy of your diploma translated by a certified translator from the official Slovak registry.
  • Entrance exam: a Biology and Chemistry test, based on the faculty’s preparatory booklets. Check the faculty’s booklets page for the exact exam content.
  • English: the faculty states that it does not require an English-language proficiency certificate.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Get the preparatory bookletsGet the faculty’s official Biology and Chemistry preparatory booklets and use them to prepare for the entrance exam.
  2. Apply online and pay the feeSubmit an application on the Comenius University e-application portal within the registration window for your chosen exam date. Pay the EUR 99 admission fee before that window closes. Upload a scan of your passport or ID card, your secondary school diploma or certificate, and proof of payment. In 2026 the last window closed on 23 July.
  3. Sit the entrance examIn 2026 the Medicine exam dates were 19 March and 2 June (both online) and 6 August (online or in person in Bratislava).
  4. Recognition and enrolmentIf you are admitted, provide the recognition statement together with a notarised copy of your Leaving Certificate, translated by a certified translator. Then enrol in September.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2026 entry there were three rounds of the entrance exam, each with its own registration window: register 1 January to 26 February 2026 for the exam on 19 March 2026; register 21 March to 12 May 2026 for the exam on 2 June 2026; register 4 June to 23 July 2026 for the exam on 6 August 2026. The March and June exams were online. For the August exam you could choose online or in person in Bratislava. You can sit only one exam per programme. Enrolment was in September 2026. Dates for 2027 entry had not been published. Expect a similar pattern, but check the faculty website..

Costs

  • EUR 13,000 per year for the 2026/27 intake. The faculty says tuition fees are guaranteed for the standard length of study. There is also a EUR 99 admission fee per application (EUR 198 if you apply for both Medicine and Dentistry), which must be paid before the registration deadline for your chosen exam date. The faculty lists one fee for the English-language programme and mentions no exemption for EU students. The 2027/28 fees had not been published when we checked.
Because the degree is from an EU country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC if it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). You must also show your current professional standing and meet English-language requirements. In older HSE intern guides, Slovakia was not on the list of countries whose graduates could apply for Irish intern posts, so check the current HSE guide for the year you apply.
