About the course

A six-year, full-time single-cycle medical degree leading to the title MUDr. (Doctor of Medicine), taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava. It includes at least 5,500 hours of theory and practical training, with no more than 5 students per instructor in clinical practice. The intake is very small, at about 15 students a year.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • The university does not publish a fixed Irish Leaving Certificate requirement. You need a completed secondary-school certificate, with an authorised Slovak translation, and foreign applicants need an official Slovak recognition (equivalence) decision for it. Contact admissions to confirm whether you need particular subjects or grades.
  • Entrance exam: a written test in English with 160 questions (80 Biology, 80 Chemistry) at secondary-school level. It lasts 150 minutes and has a maximum of 640 points (2025/26 format).
  • English: the 2025/26 admission information does not ask for a separate English-language certificate. However, you need a structured CV in English and the exam is in English. Check with admissions whether you need proof of English.

Working in Ireland afterwards

Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). If that listing says the degree must come with an internship or state-exam certificate from your home country, you need to have that too, and you must also show your current professional standing and meet the English-language requirements. Graduates of EU/EEA medical schools may apply to the HSE for Irish intern posts, but only if their home-country degree does not already count as complete training. In older HSE intern guides (e.g., the 2022 guide), only graduates from medical schools in Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Iceland and Slovenia could apply. Graduates from other EEA countries (and Italians holding the ‘abilitante’ degree) were told they are not eligible, because they qualify directly for General registration. Applicants who need no work permit were matched before those who do. Please check the current eligibility list in the HSE intern guide for the year you apply. We could not confirm it for the July 2027 intake because the current HSE guide pages are password-protected.

How to apply

  1. Check the current admission informationRead the Faculty’s General Medicine (English) admission document for the year you apply. For 2025/26 the deadline was 31 May and the exam was in June/July. Dates for 2027 are not yet published.
  2. Get your Leaving Certificate recognisedGet an authorised Slovak translation of your Leaving Certificate and apply to the Slovak authorities for an official equivalence (recognition) decision. The Faculty requires this, so leave plenty of time.
  3. Apply online and post your documentsSubmit the MAIS e-application and pay the EUR 70 fee. Then post the signed application with your translated school certificate, a medical fitness certificate that includes proof of Hepatitis B vaccination, an English CV, a passport or ID copy, a birth certificate officially translated into Slovak, a passport photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm) and proof of payment.
  4. Sit the Biology and Chemistry examTake the English-language test in Bratislava (160 questions, 150 minutes). For 2025/26 the sittings were on 20 June and 1 July. There are only about 15 places, so aim for a high score.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: For 2025/26 entry the deadline was 31 May 2025. The entrance exam was held in Bratislava on 20 June 2025 (first sitting) or 1 July 2025 (second sitting). The university has published an admission document for 2026/27, but we could not open it to check. Dates for 2027 entry are not yet published. Expect a similar late-May deadline and a June/July exam, but confirm with the Faculty..

Costs

  • EUR 10,000 a year for the English-language programme, according to the university’s admission information for 2025/26. Everyone on the English programme pays this fee, including EU students; only the Slovak-language programme is tuition-free. There is also a EUR 70 application (administrative) fee. The university does not provide accommodation for this programme, so budget for private housing in Bratislava. Confirm the 2027/28 fee with the Faculty.
Because your medical degree comes from an EU/EEA country, the Medical Council of Ireland can recognise it automatically under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, as long as it is listed in Annex V (point 5.1.1). Check the current HSE guide on how graduates of EU medical schools apply for Irish intern posts. The university does not provide accommodation for this programme.
