About the course

An interdisciplinary degree combining philosophy, political science and economics, applied to issues such as climate change, welfare policy and the ethics of markets. Taught entirely in English in small, intensive classes at VU’s John Stuart Mill College.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Leaving Certificate (Established) with at least 6 exam subjects: 2 at H5 or higher and 4 at O6/H7 or higher, plus a minimum of 350 CAO points. The LCVP is also accepted (at least 6 subjects plus the Link Modules, same grade rules and 350 points).
  • PPE also looks for a grade average equivalent to 7.0 or higher on the Dutch scale; VU does not publish the Irish conversion, so ask admissions.
  • Maths equivalent to Dutch VWO Mathematics A or B. If your level is not sufficient but your application is otherwise strong, you may get a conditional offer and must pass an entry test (e.g. OMPT-A at 65%, OMPT-F at 60%, or Boswell-Bèta at 5.5).

How to apply

  1. Apply early in StudielinkRegister in Studielink; the early-bird round (14 Feb in 2026) gives a decision within about 4 weeks. Final EU/EEA deadline expected 15 June 2027.
  2. Submit the PPE application formComplete the VU Application Form – PPE with your CV and motivation, upload transcripts and English proof, and pay the €100 fee for non-Dutch diplomas.
  3. Selection reviewThe college judges your grade average, motivation and suitability for an intensive programme, and commitment to college life. An interview may be requested.
  4. DecisionDecision 4-6 weeks after your file is complete; offers are conditional on final Leaving Cert results.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Expected 15 June 2027 (EU/EEA final deadline, based on 15 June 2026 in the 2026 cycle; confirm with VU). The 2026 early-bird round closed 14 February 2026, with decisions within 4 weeks..

Costs

  • Higher EU fee because PPE is small-scale and intensive: €5,130 (2026/27) and €5,310 (2027/28), as published by VU. Students for whom this is an insurmountable obstacle to enrolling can request a reduction, before the application deadline.
  • EU students may be eligible for a Dutch tuition-fee loan (DUO).
Selective course: the college reviews each application and may interview you. Higher tuition fees apply.
