About the course

A three-year (six-semester) science degree taught in English. After a one-year foundation in natural science you specialise in two subjects chosen from Bioprocess Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Biology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Physics. About half of the degree is project work, which is typical of RUC.

Entry requirements for Irish students

  • Denmark accepts the Leaving Certificate as an EU school-leaving qualification. RUC compares foreign qualifications with Danish upper secondary levels, mainly by the number of teaching hours in each subject over the final three years of school, using a verification form stamped by your school. RUC publishes no Ireland-specific conversion, so use its pre-assessment service or ask admissions how your Leaving Cert subjects map to Danish A/B/C levels. Do not assume Ordinary Level will count.
  • Programme requirements: Mathematics at Danish A level (375 teaching hours), plus one of these: Physics B and Chemistry B; Physics B and Biotechnology A; Chemistry B and Geoscience A; or Chemistry B, Biology A and Physics C. For Leaving Cert students this realistically means Higher Level Maths and Physics and/or Chemistry. For 2026 entry, RUC guaranteed admission to eligible applicants with a GPA of at least 2.0 on the Danish grading scale.
  • English at Danish B level (210 teaching hours) is required. RUC does not accept English tests such as IELTS or TOEFL for this, so the requirement must be met through English studied at school. Confirm with RUC that your Leaving Cert English meets it.

How to apply

  1. Check your subjects earlyBefore your senior cycle subject choices are fixed, make sure you will take Higher Level Maths and Physics and/or Chemistry. Use RUC’s pre-assessment for foreign qualifications to check that your Leaving Cert meets Mathematics A, English B and one of the science combinations.
  2. Get the verification form from your schoolAsk your school to complete and stamp RUC’s Verification Form for EU/EEA entrance exams, which records the teaching hours for each subject.
  3. Apply on optagelse.dk by 15 March 2027Apply under Quota 2 by 12:00 noon Danish time on 15 March 2027 (confirm the date on RUC’s deadlines page). You can list up to 8 choices. Upload your school documents as RUC asks.
  4. Send final results and arrange housingWhen Leaving Cert results come out in late August, upload them straight away as RUC instructs. Once you accept your offer, start looking for accommodation in Roskilde or Copenhagen, as housing is scarce. Teaching starts in August.
Deadline for Irish/EU applicants: Apply through optagelse.dk. Applicants with foreign qualifications such as the Leaving Cert normally apply under Quota 2, where the Danish national deadline is 15 March at 12:00 noon Danish time. The 5 July Quota 1 deadline does not suit Leaving Cert students because results come out in late August. RUC’s own deadlines page could not be loaded for this check, so confirm the 2027 dates there. Teaching starts in August..

Costs

  • No tuition fee for EU/EEA citizens, including Irish citizens. Roskilde University says only non-EU/EEA citizens must pay an application fee and tuition fees, so Irish applicants pay neither.
You need Higher Level Maths and science subjects that RUC counts as the required Danish levels. RUC does not accept IELTS or TOEFL for English B, so your school English must meet the requirement.
